Musical Checkout Lines

Have you ever been in a checkout line when suddenly, a “manager” comes by and turns off the lighted number sign? Usually, when this happens to me, the manager cheerfully suggests and directs me to another line.

I went to Target tonight to pick up a few things. I got in line behind one other person and started looking over my stuff. I vaguely remember seeing someone walk up to the checker, but I wasn’t paying attention. Then, the checker says, “Sir, my lane is closed. That’s why the light is off.” I looked up thinking I KNEW it was on. But I gave her the benefit of the doubt and moved to another line. This same manager walks up and turns off this lane’s light as well and walks away.

I got in a third line and eyed the manager very closely. She didn’t come over this time, but she kept looking my way. I don’t know if she was just incompetent or if she was trying to piss me off. Now I remember why I don’t shop at Target very often.

I’d be talking to Target corporate to bitch about it. One time the light got clicked off for me at the Target here in Altamonte, but they said that those of us in line (I was the last one) would still go on through.

FWIW, I have yet to experience this problem with my local Targets. And as much as I try to avoid them, I have to be honest and say that it doesn’t seem to be a problem at Wal-Mart, either.

Now, at the grocery stores…
