Driver License / Computer License

We require licenses to operate vehicles. Why not require licenses to operate computers? Most computers are more complex than most cars, anyway, right?

Put it this way, at least familiarize yourself with your computer’s native file system and know how to actually locate files on your hard drive before using a computer by yourself!

Stupidest idea ever.

Look at it this way. What OS are you going to license people to use? Windows? Government support of a monopoly. Yeah, right. Linux? Microsoft would never stand for it. OS X? Are you kidding?

What if I want to write my own operating system? (There was someone doing that at a recent Triangle Linux User Group meeting.)

Licensing for operating a computer just doesn’t make sense, in whatever way you look at it.

Now, if you had said, licensing before letting people connect to the global Internet, you might have been on to something…

Naturally, my tongue was planted firmly in cheek as I proposed the idea.

But I’m dead serious about people being turned loose on a computer and not even know how to navigate folders on their hard drives. Jeez.

I’m amazed that people are still graduating high school with ZERO computer knowledge. Teach them Linux, teach them OS X, teach them Windows, I don’t care. But for God sake, teach them SOMETHING!
