Is MacMinute Living In the Past?

This popped up today on MacMinute’s RSS feed:

NewerTech ships USB 2.0 Universal Drive Adapter

Newer Technology (NewerTech) today announced that it is shipping the NewerTech USB 2.0 Universal Drive Adapter…

[MacMinute.com]

Uhhh, “today announced…”? I’m not sure what the MacMinute crew have been smoking, but I bought one of these for work more than a month (maybe even two) ago for 20 bucks—a price even lower than this supposed “introductory” price of 25 bucks.

MacMinute also seems to think that hard drive enclosures—while admittedly are sometimes a PITA to crack open and swap a drive—are expensive items. Have they ever priced external enclosures? They can be found for less than the cost of NewerTech’s adapter.

I’m frankly a little stunned to see MacMinute make such a gaffe. The site’s always been on of my favorite for watching Apple-related headlines.

Good catch. I like those little adapters. This one:

is both cheap and easy to plug/unplug. I also have a combination one that does SATA and IDE, but it’s a bit unwieldy with more pieces and a very sticky power connector. For a cheap enclosure (i.e. a bit noisy and somewhat of a pain to crack open) I like the VANTEC NexStar:

My favorite enclosure, though, is this the WiebeTech ToughTech:

It’s super-expensive but very fast and very well designed.
