Having a Whale of a Time

Part of my job is to collect acoustic data from submarines in order to make improvements, fix problems, and so forth. Certain times of the year, we are “fortunate” enough to hear porpoises and whales singing in the water. I say fortunate, but I have to say that their sounds make it very difficult to listen to our boats.

What I find interesting is that these animals like to follow our boats around, essentially playing with them. Now I don’t deny that there may be some problems related to loud noises and whales beaching themselves. But more frequently, I think the marine life actually likes our boats and are more curious than afraid. Something to keep in mind next time you hear the media proclaiming how the evil Navy is destroying sea life.
