OS X Spell Check Quirk
Something to be aware of—I was about to report a bug in MarsEdit but soon realized this is really an issue with OS X. Apparently, the built-in spell check that underscores incorrect words with red dashes will only work if you type a space or some punctuation after the word. It will not, however, mark the word if the cursor is still blinking at the end of the last letter, and that text area loses focus (e.g. I tabbed to MarsEdit’s entry body area after having misspelled the last word of the title I had typed).
I realize this isn’t exactly a bug because it makes sense that a word isn’t highlighted until you’ve moved past it. The events Apple defined that indicate “I’m done typing this word” are sound. It’s just that one more event definition should be added—when a text field loses focus, the last word in that field should be checked.

Marie - not every application uses (or is able to use) OS X’s built-in spell-check feature—Word included. This blog entry specifically refers to the OS X spell-check and has no relevance to Word’s functionality.

My spell check doesn’t work on Word. It says: “The spelling and grammar check is complete. Text set to (no proofing) was skipped.” I did what it said to fix it but it didn’t work.
