Thar She Blows!
I work for a civilian government agency that listens to navy boats with underwater microphones (hydrophones) in order to solve problems and determine vulnerabilities.
On a recent trip, with no navy boat around, I was able to record some audio of the whales that frequently visit us. This MP3 is about 350 KB and 15 seconds in length. (Update: My colleagues say the frequency was a lot higher which indicates a smaller animal and there were quite a number of them which makes it most likely the sounds were from porpoises rather than whales.) The boat you hear in the background is a fishing boat that wouldn’t get out of the area before the whales stopped singing. However, you can hear the whales just fine.
Update: Here’s another clearer audio file, this time of an orca. It’s about 275 KB.
