Networking Nimrod

I’m often amused (or annoyed) by some of the comments that get posted to ATPM.com. As the comment editor, it’s my job to zap inappropriate or irrelevant comments. I used to actually take the time to edit typos or unclear statements. That practice quickly died due to the volume of interaction the site gets, but I will occasionally edit a comment that is mostly okay to keep but has one portion to the contrary.

Anyway, it was all I could do to not verbally beat the last commenter over the head for his stupidity. In short, he had a wireless router that was feeding internet connectivity to his laptop—wirelessly, so he apparently knew how to set up a router. He recently acquired a desktop and ran an ethernet cable from the router and realized there was no ethernet jack on the computer, and he’s asking for help what to do!

I somehow managed to restrain my disdain and point him to a $13 SMC network adapter card at CompUSA.

(Bad parody alert…)

“Duuuh, my car doesn’t have any gas in it. What can I do?”

Keep in mind that many routers are zero maintenance for the average user. Plug them in and go. He probably has no knowledge of what he did.
