More Comment Spam-fighting Tactics

I fully realize it’s mild compared to the amount received by other people, but last night’s hit of 20 comment spams has pushed me to the next level. This won’t prevent the comments from getting added in the first place, but I vehemently intend to keep spammers from using my site for PageRank links. HTML tags have always been disabled in my comments. I’ve taken this a step further by disabling URL auto-linking.

So, to those legitimate commenters (welcome), continue typing URLs into a comment whenever appropriate. Readers will just have to highlight, copy, and paste to use them.

If the spammers keep getting more clever, you may find yourself moderating the comments. You’d think these ***hole spammers would get a clue.

Sorry, due to comment spam abuse, new comments on this entry are closed until I find time to upgrade Movable Type and enable registration and moderation.
