So-called New Release

I’m sort of an Alanis Morissette fan. Not fanatic…just a fan. Thus, I felt the urge to note today’s release of her latest album, So-Called Chaos. I read the All Music entry for this album and my attention was drawn to the part talking about how so many of her songs pertain to a former lover.

“There are still strands of bitterness, cynicism, and jealously, yet they feel like unfinished business that she’s slowly putting to rest. Nowhere is this more true than on ‘This Grudge’ which, for all intents and purposes, looks like the final chapter in the tale of ‘The Relationship,’ the one that fueled ‘You Oughta Know,’ since she acknowledges that she’s held ‘this grudge’ for ‘14 years, 30 minutes, 15 seconds’ and through ‘11 songs’ and ‘four full journals’ (and, given Alanis’ penchant for confession and single-minded obsession, chances are she’s not exaggerating).”

Useless tidbit: the All Music write-up for this album says it’s her fourth, but there’s no way that can be true. All Music itself lists Jagged Little Pill, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, Alanis Unplugged (the MTV concert), Under Rug Swept, Feast on Scraps, and today’s So-Called Chaos. I’m no math major, but I think that adds up to six, and this only counts her U.S. releases. Maybe the count of four is only referring to Maverick label releases, but sites like Rock On the Net reveal that she recorded some singles and a self-titled LP in Canada before moving to Los Angeles.

No, I’m not buying this one via iTMS. My favorite artists enjoy my purchase of their physical CDs—especially since Alanis’ discs usually have some sort of multimedia on them and this latest one is no exception.
