Why Did They Even Bother?

This entry is sort of a sidebar to the preceding rant, so if you choose to visit the site to see what I’m talking about, be aware that the site is going to try and change the size of your browser window.

Have you seen the Mitsubishi commercial comparing their car to another one in accident avoidance tests? The last item they throw out of a truck are full-sized cars. The commercial halts just as the test cars are approaching the pushed-out car shells and the viewer is invited to go to in order to, well duh, see what happens.

So I went to take a look. After I spoke a colorful metaphor because the site changed the size of my window, I watched the video with baited anticipation, hoping the competitor’s vehicle would either completely wipe out or, at the very least, suffer some kind of damage, having not avoided the accident. (This was supposed to be an accident avoidance, test, right?)

But the idiot director of the filming seemed to think this was more of an action movie sequence than a factual representation. The camera movements, angles, and positions completely favored showing what the Mitsubishi car did. I still have no idea what the other car did to get around the wrecked car shell. By the time the camera was trained on the other car, it had swerved to the side of the road and the driver/actor was doing a horrible job of pretending to be annoyed at what happened. But why did he stop? Sure, he was on the side of the road, but nothing had hit him (at least the camera didn’t show anything hitting him) and the side of the road was clear for him to keep driving.

If you figured out what was going on, please hit the comment link and enlighten the rest of us.

Here’s the URL for the broadband version of the SWF file, for those of you not wanting to have your browser windows evilly resized.

And as far as what’s happening to the guy in the Camry? Well, I think he stops out of frustration. He appears to be driving along normally until he looks up and sees that the Galant (and trailing motorcycle carrying a camera — watch for that near the end!) is so far ahead of him, at which point he throws up his hands in frustration.
